Dr Ross Perry

Dr Ross Perry is a holistic veterinarian and avian health specialist dedicated to advancing the welfare of birds and other animals, especially street dogs, caged birds, orangutans and elephants in Bali and South East Asia.
He graduated from the University of Sydney with BSc(Vet) (Hons), BVSc (Hons) in 1972 as a veterinary surgeon and physician, then worked in small animal practice at Forestville, Sydney, treating small animals (including birds and exotic species) and wildlife.
Dr Perry co-owned and worked in Fauna Park and Tourist Attraction in Sydney from 1987 to 1990. He became Australia’s first registered bird specialist in caged and aviary bird health in 1992-3. Dr Perry operated the Homebush Animal Hospital until 2006 and provided facilities variously as Dog Pound for a number of local councils. He donated his Homebush Animal Hospital equipment and supplies to the vet school and vets in Bali and to the Southern Cross Wildlife Hospital in the south of Sydney.
Dr Perry was the first to describe and name Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). He also wrote Vade Mecum 2 Diseases of Birds and many articles and papers, and often spoke about bird diseases at veterinary conferences. Dr Perry has lectured on a wide range of topics including many aspects of caged and aviary bird welfare at annual conferences of the Association of Avian Veterinarians and the Association of Avian Veterinarians Australasian Committee, with extensive notes published in the associated proceedings. Likewise, he has contributed major articles to Proceedings of the Post-Graduate Committee in Veterinary Science, University of Sydney, with a major focus on improving the welfare and management of sick, ailing, orphaned and injured and maimed birds (including very extensive notes in Proceedings 55 on Caged and Avian Birds and Proceedings 104 on Australian Wildlife).

Dr Perry currently consults from home part time and is writing a series of species-specific books on bird health and disease. He is open to being invited to give talks, seminars and workshops and off- the- cuff question and answer evenings relating to aspects of veterinary science, animal welfare and scientific dowsing, provided his essential costs are covered.
