"The cull of Australian sheep in Karachi (‘‘ Sheep clubbed, buried alive in cull’’ , September 28) is the latest revelation of the mindless brutality that awaits animals sent for live export.
The scenes evoke the footage from Indonesian abattoirs that made headlines 18 months ago. The Australian government has since reassured the public that its reforms to the trade will protect the welfare of our exported livestock.
What a mockery then, to see that same ‘‘ assurance’ ’ system so easily bypassed when Karachi police forced the exporter’s stockmen to leave the feedlot where sheep were then inhumanely culled.
The joint efforts of Wellard Group (the exporter), the Federal Agriculture Department and the Australian high commissioner in Pakistan have not managed to save one single sheep from a cruel death.
