2013 Review of the National Wool Declaration

The Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) recently approved a number of recommendations arising from the 5th review of the National Wool Declaration (NWD). Sentient submitted comments to the review, highlighting the need to retain a classification system for mulesed and non-mulesed sheep. We were concerned that the proposed omission of such classifications would remove incentives for farmers to phase out mulesing. We're happy to see that Mulesing Status Categories were retained; and that wool growers are also able to state whether or not they used pain relief during mulesing procedures, further increasing incentives for best practice.
