ADVOCACY - Voice for Animals (Independent Office of Animal Welfare) Bill 2015

October 4, 2015

Sentient supports the establishment of an Independent Office of Animal Welfare.

President Dr Rosemary Elliott appeared before the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Land Transport Committee on 14 September 2015 alongside Nicola Beynon (Head of Campaigns Australia, World Animal Protection) and Emmanuel Giuffre (Legal Counsel, Voiceless) to consider Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon’s Voice for Animals Bill. Graeme McEwen (Director, Barristers Animal Welfare Panel) then outlined in detail why our current animal welfare regulatory frameworks should be supplemented by a national statutory authority with animal welfare functions.

One of the key issues addressed was the need for national leadership in setting animal welfare standards that are consistent with public expectations and with sound animal welfare science, rather than relying on codes of practice which are industry-driven and may be used in defence of practices that would otherwise breach animal cruelty legislation.
