New rules for selling or giving away dogs and cats in NSW

April 30, 2019

In June 2015, Sentient submitted to the Joint Select Committee on Companion Animal Breeding Practices in New South Wales to advocate for stronger regulations to protect the welfare of companion animals. This month, the NSW Government has announced that in response to this inquiry, from 1 July 2019 it will be mandatory for anyone who sells or gives away cats or dogs to include an identification number in any advertisement (including online advertisements). This could be the animal’s microchip number, breeder identification number or rehoming organisation number. These numbers can be used to search the NSW Pet Registry by potential buyers wishing to learn about the animal’s history and can potentially be used by enforcement agencies to identify problem breeders.
