90% are concerned about animal welfare standards in Australian farming

May 15, 2019

Professor Paul McGreevy and Amelia Cornish from Sydney University and Dr Bidda Jones, Chief Scientist with RSPCA Australia, discuss a government-commissioned report that found 95% of Australians surveyed are concerned about the welfare of farmed animals, and 91% want reforms to address this. And very heartening is the conclusion that this is due to growing public appreciation of animal sentience, expressed by over 90% of respondents. Here is the dilemma – there is little confidence in the powers of the federal Department of Agriculture to support high standards of animal welfare given their role of promoting industry. Sentient joins other animal organisations in calling for an Independent Office of Animal Welfare.
