Assessing the welfare of free-roaming wild horses

February 14, 2020

Congratulations to Sentient’s Dr Andrea Harvey who is first author in a recent publication entitled: ‘A ten-stage protocol for assessing the welfare of individual non-captive wild animals: Free-roaming horses as an example’.

This novel research uses the Five Domains Model to scientifically assess the welfare of free-roaming wild horses during their normal day-to-day lives, which will be crucial for guiding management decisions about these animals. This article is of interest for both specific equine welfare and also for general conservation, and is highly topical given the impact of the bushfire crisis on both native and non-native wild species.
